Yai Restaurant sits quietly along Hollywood Boulevard, serving up straightforward, authentic Thai dishes in a no-frills setting that suits casual dinners or weekday lunches. This full-service eatery reflects its name – which translates to “grandma” in Thai – through its comforting, home-style flavors rather than ornate presentation or trendy decor.

The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with friendly staff who keep things moving at a steady pace, making it a dependable spot if you want solid Thai food without a long wait. Expect a modest dining room that fills steadily during lunch and early dinner hours, especially with locals from the neighborhood looking for familiar tastes.

The menu leans into classic dishes prized for their balance of flavors and comforting qualities. Popular picks include the Roasted Pork with Chinese Broccoli, which balances tender meat with vibrant greens, and the Papaya Salad, offering a sharp, refreshing contrast. The Tom Kha Hotpot stands out as a more unusual choice here, delivering a rich, spicy-sour broth that heats up the table conversation.

Seafood options like Shrimp Fried Rice and Octopus allow for some variety, while noodle dishes such as Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles appeal to those after hearty, well-seasoned comfort food. A widely appreciated touch is the generous portion of sticky rice that often accompanies the meal, helping round out the more intense flavors.

Practical note: Yai operates on a cash-only basis, so it’s smart to arrive prepared. Prices are reasonable given the location and quality, making it a pragmatic choice for both repeat visits and newcomers curious about Thai cuisine beyond the typical takeout options.

Overall, Yai Restaurant serves people who value straightforward, richly flavored Thai cooking in a straightforward, no-hassle environment. It’s a solid option for working lunches, casual dinners with friends, or those evenings when a familiar, satisfying meal feels just right.

Loved our lunch here! We ordered 3 dishes and were impressed with them all. Super authentic Thai food with quick and friendly service. Our waitress was very nice and packed our to-go boxes for us, she even gave us extra sticky rice to take home!

Authentic Thai food in Thai town so happy I was introduced to this hidden gem by a friend In Thai, ‘Yai’ means grandma & the name is so fitting as the food was so comforting and legit. @eatswithedith Ordered: 1. BBQ pork 2. Tom kha gai (hot & sour chicken soup w/ coconut milk) 3. Pad see ew w/ shrimp Every dish was exploding with flavor & I loved how they all complemented each other. The bbq pork was my favorite which is surprising bc I don’t love pork! The sauce that it was paired with was just so delicious The Tom kha gai was super creamy and just tangy enough. It’s the perfect dish to have on a cold day Tips: -bring cash!! This spot is cash ONLY -there is a small parking lot so if you go on a weekday it’s pretty easy to find parking Price: $56/meal

This is probably my favorite Thai place now. Their Chinese sausage and pork fried rice was so flavorful that we ate the entire plate, and their pad see ew is one of the best in town. The soup was a little salty but still good! Cash only so don’t forget.

The food here is pretty authentic for LA Thai food, and the waitresses are really nice. Also, everything came quickly from the kitchen. When you take into account that everything everywhere has gotten more expensive lately, I think the prices are pretty fair. They only take cash though so be prepared for that.

Second-Best Thai Restaurant in LA! I had an amazing experience at this restaurant. Their crispy pork with basil leaves was absolutely outstanding—easily the best I've found in the U.S.! The pork was perfectly crispy and flavorful, making it a must-try dish. I also try their stir-fried water spinach and tom yum soup. The stir-fried water spinach had a delightful smoky flavor and was cooked to perfection, with the ideal texture and temperature. As for the tom yum, it was decent, but nothing extraordinary compared to the other dishes. The service was exceptional. The staff were warm, attentive, and professional. Unfortunately, I forgot to get the name of the server who took care of us, but she did an excellent job and made the experience even better. A quick note: This restaurant only accepts cash payments, so plan accordingly!

We had a FEAST at Yai! I’m surprised it doesn’t have good amount of reviews. Amazing flavors, vegeterian curry and delicious duck curry! I had the Nam Tok Beef salad and the taste was out of this world! My taste buds were going crazy!!! Try the shrimp soup too!
